The Desjardini tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii) is a saltwater fish with a deep body, large fins, and a striking color pattern:
- Size: Males can grow to be around 16 inches long.
- Body shape: Oval-shaped with a deep body that's 1.8 to 2 times its depth.
- Fins: Large, sail-like dorsal and anal fins. The dorsal fin has 4 spines and 27 to 31 soft rays, while the anal fin has 2 spines and 22 to 24 soft rays.
- Color: Deep blue with yellowish-orange horizontal stripes, white polka dots on the face, and dark grey vertical bars with orange or yellow vertical lines.
- Tail: Dark and spotted.
- Scalpel: A razor-sharp spike located at the base of the tail that's nearly invisible when it's flat.
- Behavior: Generally peaceful and gets along well with other fish, but can be aggressive towards its own species.
- Diet: Herbivore that eats filamentous algae, flake food, frozen food, and live food.
- Habitat: Well-established aquariums with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots among live rock formations.
Desjardini tangs from the Indo-Pacific region are typically larger and have a more brilliant color palette than those from the Red Sea.
