The Pearly Jawfish, also known as the Yellowhead Jawfish, is a small, tropical fish with a yellow head and a pearly white or light blue-green body:
- Size: Can grow up to 4 inches long in an aquarium, or 5 inches in the wild
- Color: Yellow head and upper body, with a pearlescent blue hue that fades down the body
- Features: Large mouth, protruding eyes, and an elongated body with a blunt head
- Behavior: Active digger that creates burrows in the sand to hide and watch for food
- Habitat: Lives in the sandy, rubble-strewn areas of coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea
- Tank care: Requires a stable, well-established saltwater aquarium with a deep sandy substrate, plenty of hiding spots, and a peaceful environment
- Feeding: Shy feeder that can be enticed with small pieces of meaty foods near its burrow
- Tank mates: Can be kept in groups if the aquarium is large enough and they are all added at the same time
- Other considerations: Known for being a jumper when startled, so the tank should have a tight-fitting lid
