The Captive Squarebox Anthias, also known as the squarespot anthias, is a substantial open-water reef fish. Mature males develop the conspicuous square flank marking, while females and juveniles have a different appearance.

Quick Care Guide

Scientific name Pseudanthias pleurotaenia
Care level Moderate to advanced
Recommended aquarium 125 gallons or larger; larger for a group
Adult size About 8 inches
Temperament Peaceful toward other species; hierarchical with anthias
Diet Carnivore / planktivore
Reef compatibility Reef safe

Tank Requirements

Provide a long swimming area, strong oxygenation and shaded rock shelters. Use a secure cover and filtration able to handle frequent feeding without letting water quality deteriorate. Tank recommendations refer to long-term housing; adult size, tank footprint and existing livestock also matter.

Diet & Feeding

Offer small plankton-sized frozen foods and suitable marine pellets in at least three small meals daily. Newly introduced or thin fish may need more frequent targeted meals. Confirm every individual is eating.

Temperament & Compatibility

Keep with peaceful, active fish that will not monopolize meals. Groups need substantially more room than a single fish, with careful sex ratios and observation for aggression. Dominant individuals may change sex as the social group develops.

Water Conditions

  • Temperature: 75–78°F
  • Specific gravity: 1.024–1.026
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Ammonia and nitrite: undetectable

Maintain stable conditions, good oxygenation and regular water quality checks. Match acclimation to the fish's actual holding water.

Special Considerations

The square male marking is not present on every individual. Captive-raised fish still require frequent meals and enough swimming space to reach their full size.

Sold individually unless the selected listing states otherwise. Size, color and pattern vary by specimen.
