Appearance & Transformation
- Juvenile: Deep blue body with alternating electric blue and white rings, sometimes with a dorsal filament (depending on origin).
- Adult: Develops bold yellow and blue horizontal stripes, a pale blue face, and a dark eye mask.
- Change: Begins around 3-6 inches, can take months to a year, and is a gradual process.
Care Requirements (Intermediate/Advanced)
- Tank Size: Needs a very large tank, minimum 220 gallons, to accommodate adult size (up to 15 inches).
- Diet: Omnivorous; needs a varied diet of marine algae (Spirulina), seaweed, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and prepared angelfish formulas.
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive; less territorial than adults but still assertive; generally ignore tankmates after settling in.
- Reef Safety: Not 100% reef safe; will likely nip at corals (especially LPS) and clam mantles as they mature, requiring careful planning.
Behavior
- May swim at an angle or "tilt," which can be normal submissive behavior.
- Needs plenty of rockwork for hiding and grazing.
- Quarantine is highly recommended due to disease susceptibility.
