Nassarius snails are small, oval-shaped, spiral-shelled snails that are a great addition to a saltwater aquarium:
- Appearance: They have tightly spiraled shells and are commonly called "zombie snails".
- Behavior: They are slow-moving and spend most of their time buried in the sand, with only a siphon extending above the surface. When food is detected, they quickly emerge from the sand to eat it.
- Diet: They are carnivorous and eat detritus, uneaten food, decaying organics, and fish waste. They can be fed algae wafers, fish food pellets, frozen brine shrimp, Can O Cyclops, Benepets, and mysis.
- Benefits: They help prevent compaction and aerate aquarium substrate. They are also a valuable member of a reef aquarium clean up crew, especially if the aquarium has a sand substrate.
- Origin: They are native to the Caribbean, Indonesia, and Mexico.
- Care: They are hardy and have easy care levels. However, copper or fluctuations in salinity can hurt them.
